What we do

Year 4 11 plus

We make sure that the Year 4 foundation skills are solid and secure. This allows a smoother transition into the Year 5 learning syllabus and enables progression from skills already grasped. All work undertaken in Year 4 tutoring sessions are also beneficial to their school classroom learning.

Starting in Year 4 gives plenty of time to learn at a steady pace. We ensure that any gaps in learning are identified early and tutoring sessions are adapted to address these before Year 5 learning is started.

- Regular reading to enrich their vocabulary knowledge
- Solid times tables to increase calculation accuracy and speed later in Year 5
- 4 operations knowledge – column addition, subtraction (with number exchange) multiplication and long division.
- Comprehension
- Spelling rules
- Confident understanding of basic punctuation

Year 5 11 plus

In Year 5, we teach the children the essential skills needed to complete their 11 plus journey. Preparing for the 11 plus can be challenging and competitive We deliver quality lessons to enhance their skills and in doing so, maximise their chance for successfully earning a place at their chosen Grammar School within Gloucestershire.

Children will go through a cycle of learning new skills, practise, assessment/monitoring and evaluation.  This is essential for continuous progress and learning growth. Adjustments can then be made along the journey to cater for strengths and areas still needing support. Through our expertise and dedication,  parents can enjoy peace of mind knowing that their child's education in safe hands.

‍In addition to the above
- Progress tests in December and March. We collate and use the information to inform the sessions we plan for weekly.
- January – the start of 11 plus booster classes
- April – the first ‘in person’ mock exam
- These will allow regular monitoring to inform continuous progress within the tutoring sessions.

Year 5 Progress tests

Progress tests are taken in year 5 as part of the monitoring process in December and again in March. These are designed to enable us to quickly and effectively identify strengths and weaknesses.

Parents will receive an email highlighting these areas with suggestions on how to further improve their child’s learning. The results of these tests determine how we plan the next set of lessons so that gaps in their learning are being catered for.

These tests however aren’t to replace the mock exams which typically start in April, as these play a different role in the process. See mock tests for more information.

Year 5 Mocks

Mock tests enable the children to experience what the 11 plus test will involve. It gives them the ‘feeling’ of the test and what the day will be like.

Taking the mock tests allow the children to become familiar with them and in doing so, they become second nature to them rather than a brand new experience.

This in turn helps to reduce any anxiety and instead helps boosts confidence. Mock exams themselves, help us to gather a wealth of data that will identify clearly ‘what went well’ and any gaps in learning – either as a group or individually.  These will then be taught in the future lessons – plugging the gaps in learning.

Year 5 11 plus Booster Courses

As the children take the progress tests, it will become clear what areas of the 11 plus are going well and what areas need more support.

We start short courses in January to address these areas and to allow children to have intensive sessions on specific areas within the 11 plus topics to considerably improve understanding and confidence.

What Sets Us Apart

Feedback to parents and progress updates

We recognise how important parents are as part of the 11 plus journey.

This ‘journey’ can be described as a puzzle with many parts and we all have a role in order to complete it. Discussing with your child the work they covered gives them the extra challenge of recalling information and skills taught weekly. Discussing with your child the work they covered gives them the extra challenge of recalling information and skills taught weekly
How we keep parents updated:
- Weekly email which outlines a brief summary of what their child has learnt but we also send attachments of work carried out within the sessions.
- We also give parent evenings and information evenings throughout  the year to give you the best chance of being well informed along the way.
- Progress and mocks test results/scores are always sent to the parents with clear suggestions on how their child can continue developing progress.

About the GL Assessment

In Gloucestershire we have seven Grammar Schools located in Stroud, Gloucester and Cheltenham.

All of the Grammar Schools use ‘Granada Learning’ – a leading provider of the 11 plus exam assessment. Many parents may have heard this exam being referred to as the ‘GL Grammar Entrance Exam’.

The children take the exam early in Year 6. When purchasing  material to support your child, you must ensure that it matches content needed for the GL exam as not all Grammar Entrance exams follow the same format and learning content. The exam itself is challenging and is designed to be as such, in order to identify the top achievers with questions and skills many of which are not covered in schools alone.

We at Positive Path Tutoring, teach and guide the children with well structured steps to ensure the understanding of these new skills to prepare the children for their exam.

Homework is also sent to keep the practise going in between sessions but we recommend also purchasing your own to work on further.
